It's interesting to know that the development of the Ferrari F40 takes no more than 13 months. That's remarkable given the fact nowadays a new model needs at least five years. Some might say the reason is the car's ascetic interior. There's no carpet and upholstery, something never seen before in a Ferrari road car. The engineering and design team don't spend much time on the colour decision either. All 1311 produced cars are in the emblematic Rosso Corsa paint. 

So this makes us wonder, "What if there are other available colours?". Later a few F40 owners repaint their cars primarily in yellow or black.

The simplified interior doesn't stop Ferrari F40 from becoming an instant legend. It's the car's design, stance, speed, aerodynamics, technology and gated gearshift that make it the late '80s and early '90s beauty queen. It is also the successor of the legendary 288 GTO and the last Ferrari designed under the direct supervision of Enzo Ferrari. At the time it is Ferrari's fastest, most powerful and most expensive car. 

 

The Ferrari F40: A race car for the road

It is built on tubular space-frame chassis, complemented with kevlar and carbon-fiber materials. Lightweight materials are used for the the bonnet and boot lid to reduce the weight even further. The windows are plexiglass. So a curb weight a bit higher than 1250kg doesn't come as a surprise.

The V8 heart of this beauty is relatively small, just 2.9 litres. Thanks to a couple of turbochargers, it produces 471 horsepower which is enough to achieve 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than 4 seconds and 0 to 100 miles in 8 seconds flat. Its quarter-mile run is clocked at 11.5 seconds and this is an impressive result for a road vehicle even today.

Marco De Toma

Marco De Toma, affectionately known as Deto, was born in Brazil and raised in Milan, Italy from the age of two. His love affair with cars began at the tender age of seven when his father introduced him to rally events. This early exposure ignited a passion that manifested in drawings and continued to grow. Later he pursued a degree in Transportation Design at IAAD in Turin.

During his university years, Marco ventured into illustrations, drawing inspiration from the thrill of speed and the dynamic use of colors. His artwork seeks to capture the very soul of sports cars, employing a vibrant spectrum to symbolize the fluid changes induced by velocity. While Marco holds a deep appreciation for the entire realm of transportation, vintage cars occupy a special place in his heart.
