There is no #finecarart without the BMW Art Cars. The original idea of using racing cars as canvas for fine art came from the French racer Hervé Poulain who commissioned the American artist Alexander Calder to paint his BMW 3.0 CSL which he raced with at 24 Hours of Le Mans. There are 17 BMW art cars up to date and No. 4 was created by the pop art icon Andy Warhol. He even took responsibility for transferring the proposed artwork to the actual car body. Which wasn’t pretty common for him and his army of assistants. Warhol said about his BMW M1 artwork that it is a portrait of speed.
And the M1 was really fast car with its 6-cylinder engine with power output as of 470 hp. The BMW M1 art car with racing number 76 finished just second in its class at the 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans. This was its first and last competition.
