Ford Mustang 1970 Boss 302
Ford Mustang 1970 Boss 302
In the world of pony cars, the 1970 Mustang Boss 302 stands out as Ford's response to GM's Corvette Z/28. This remarkable car was powered by the 1969-70 302 H.O. engine, specifically developed in 1968 for the SCCA's 1969 Trans-Am road racing series.
The 302 H.O. engine, as installed in the contemporary factory-made Boss 302 Mustangs, was a unique Ford small-block masterpiece. It featured a thin-wall casting and differed significantly from the regular 302 engines. Notable distinctions included four-bolt main bearings, screw-in freeze plugs, a higher nickel content, and cylinder heads utilizing a canted valve design that had been initially developed for the 351C engine, making its debut in late 1969 Mustangs. This combination of specialized features contributed to the Boss 302's remarkable performance and iconic status among pony cars.
