Mini Cooper S Monte Carlo Rally
Mini Cooper S Monte Carlo Rally
This is what the big win of a small car looks like. Mini Cooper S was successful on its rally campaign with titles in 1964, 1965 and 1967. In fact Mini was simply perfect for rally racing with its light weight, nippy engine and go-kart handling. But the BMC rally team got successful not until Rauno Aaltonen from Finland joined the brits. This man is still known as “The Rally Professor” having started his racing career on speed boats and later on moved on to motorcycles before he became the first Finnish European Rally champion. He was also the first Finn to win a moto GP competition.
This beautiful painting depicts a moment from 1967 Monte Carlo Rally undisputedly won by Rauno Aaltonen and his Mini Cooper S. Undisputedly because the year before all three Mini-s placed from 1st to 3rd were disqualified because of lights that allegedly did not conform with the official regulations. So in 1967, Aaltonen and Henry Liddon as co-driver were good enough for the win.
