Porsche 911 1968
Porsche 911 1968
This Porshe is neither the fastest, nor the most successful in racing. It simply has the most iconic Porsche design ever. Celebrate its eternal silhouette with this 1968 Porsche 911 poster art by Karolis Mikolenas.
Tribute to the most iconic Porsche design
The first generation of Porsche 911 had to be indexed as 901, after its internal project name. But it is only the Peugeot company that has the right of naming car models with three numbers with a zero in the middle. So 901 becomes the precious 911 - this is the quick story of the 911 index.
The car is the successor of Porsche 356, the first car Ferdinand Porsche creates for his own brand. It keeps the Beetle layout – rear-engine, rear-drive, 2 + 2 seaters, used for the 356 model. Butzi Porsche guides the development of the car's design. He is the son of Ferry Porsche and the grandson of Ferdinand Porsche who thinks of himself as a "technically talented craftsman in shaping". He wants to create a more spacious and comfortable car than the 356 while preserving the fun driving experience mandatory for every Porsche car then and now.
Ferdinand Porsche and Erwin Komenda, the chief engineer and leader of car-body production, do not approve of 911's final sketch. So Ferry Porsche takes his son`s drawings to Reutter coachbuilder that is just across the street. They give the final shape of 911 which later turns into an automotive icon.
Porsche 911 is powered by 6-cylinder boxer engine capable of 130 hp, mated to 5-speed manual transmission. The car has steel wheels and chrome trim inside and out. 911 is a tail-happy vehicle because of the increased power and skinny tires.
