Here is this dual exhaust, two-door, four-speed, madly cute and utterly slow, 32 hp Abarth 595 SS that comes straight out of 1963. It is one of the slowest cars ever to make it to the automotive hall of fame. The 595SS utilises a Solex carburettor, bored out engine, high compression pistons, high lift camshafts, modified inlet ports, alloy large capacity sump, Abarth valve cover and air filter.

Above anything else, this is the car that makes it cool to drive a small, agile car with lower horsepower. It delivers high levels of driving excitement and adrenaline. When it is first launched, it is among the coolest cars in Europe (and why not the coolest one). It is one of the few poster-worthy small cars out there. Now imagine driving one of these in Rome on a hot summer day, touring around the Coliseum and stopping for some pasta fresca. May sound as a cliche but it is truly Italian, isn't it?

This tiny Abarth 595 SS art is a pocket bomb tribute

Now let's see who is the genius mind behind this unusual car. Karl (Carlo) Alberto Abarth is an Austrian man of Italian origin who has a life no less exciting than his creations. Mr Abarth's long career includes positions of motorcycle chassis designer and engineer, also a motorcycle-racing driver. He becomes European champion five times and founds two automotive companies.

Unfortunately, Abarth's racing career ends briefly after a horrific incident, but he is off to the next adventure. He designes a sidecar for a motorcycle and wins a historic race against the Orient express in 1933 racing from Vienna to Ostend. Carlo's list of friends includes Ferdinand Porsche, Anton Piech, Tazio Nuvolari, Rudolf Hruska and Piero Dusio. This is quite impressive even if you are in the racing business.

Together with the guys mentioned above, Carlo Abarth ventures into F1 car creation under the company name of Cisitalia. This culminates in a car known as the Type 360. It created together with Porsche and utilises some revolutionary designs and a 1.5-liter supercharged engine. Sadly the design turns out to be too sophisticated for the small company; in addition to that F1 bans in 1952 supercharged engines. This results in Cisitalia's bankrupt.

But Mr Abarth has a new idea. He founds Abarth & C. together with his test driver Guido Scagliarini. Although Abarth sells it to Fiat in 1971, he stays in charge as a CEO.

Nostalgic of '60's Italian beauty

Abarth has a life story that makes you nostalgic of the '60's. Suddenly all those things that could have killed you back in the day like dangerous driving, lack of regulations and too much smoking, start looking super attractive. That's what icons do with our imagination.

Surely Abarth 595 SS is an icon in the automotive world. Now you can bring a little piece of unique car design by ordering this super Italian art print by Marc Carreras. Simply Petrol makes sure your poster is created on high-quality paper using only top printing technology.
