roup B rallying creates epic cars like Lancia 037 and Lancia Delta S4. But the Italians have even more to offer. Enzo Ferrari attacks the Group B track with a contender based on the extremely beautiful 308 GTB. The tragic crash with Henri Toivonen and the cancellation of the Group B race series leaves all 272 examples of Ferrari 288 GTO untouched. The car is beautiful and extreme but artist Dziugas Valancauscas presents it as smooth as silk in his Ferrari 288 GTO art print.

A sleek Ferrari 288 GTO art

Leonardo Fioravanti creates this car for Pininfarina. Ferrari 308 GTB/GTS heavily influences it both aesthetically and technically. The car receives the same V8 engine but it has twin turbochargers that stimulate it in the GTO guise. To make sure there is enough space for them, Ferrari mounts the 288 GTO engine longitudinally.

This solution pays off with an engine capable of 400 hp, and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5 seconds. Ferrari claims top speed of 189 mph or 304 km/h. This is the first street-legal car that passes the 300 km/h barrier.

Ferrari 288 GTO front

The main competitor of Ferrari 288 GTO is Porsche 959. While the Germans opt for the hi-tech route with its four-wheel drive, the Italians play it old school – low weight and high power. Ferrari 288 GTO measures just 1160 kg thanks to the extensive use of carbon fibre and kevlar composites. This is a direct technology transfer by Scuderia Ferrari F1 team.

Ferrari 288 GTO is a racing car that never gets into racing but becomes the fastest production car in the world. It is the inspiration behind this art print by Dziugas Valankauskas. Make it yours now at Simply Petrol marketplace.

Džiugas Valančauskas

It was 1996. She, a BMW E30 M3, stood provocatively in the street near my block of flats. My first love, she opened my eyes and ripped my heart apart. I could only stand and stare. Touching her was forbidden.

From that moment on, the BMW 3-series coupe became a hole in my heart which I knew I would have to one day fill. When, after many years of searching, I found my own BMW E30 325i coupe, I was as happy as a child again. I could sit for hours and breathe in the combined aroma of upholstery, grease and petrol. Every classic car has that same smell, but each one is a little different. Out of this love was born my art - classic cars drawn while breathing in their smell.
