The Hispano-Suiza Xenia Coupe is a creation of the luxury coachbuilder Jacques Saoutchik. He works in close partnership with the aerodynamicist Jean Andreau. The car is tailor-made for the French pilot and racing car driver André Dubonnet in 1938. The vehicle is one of the most exquisite examples of automotive art deco. W. Flemming celebrates its unique beauty and bold lines with a series of art prints available only at Simply Petrol.

Andre Dubonnet is an amazing aviator, racer, and inventor. He inherits Dubonnet aperitif firm but t s his intriguing inventions that makes him truly famous. Dubonet's experiments with solar power almost make him bankrupt. In the automotive history, he is popular with his passion for aerodynamics.

What saves Dubonnet is the creation of hs suspension system. He successfully sells his patents to General Motors, FIAT, Delahaye and Alfa Romeo. Later it becomes obvious that the system has serious disadvantages. It is prone to leaking and is too expensive to repair. Well, it all starts way more glamourous with the system being implemented for the first time in the truly distinctive on-off Hispano-Suiza Xenia Dubonnet.

Jean Saoutchik is in charge of the design and the one who creates the avant-garde interpretation of the teardrop shape of the car. Xenia Dubonet is different from any other car back in 1938.

 

 

 

The overall body evokes the elegance typical for the era, but it is the details of the car that scream Art Deco. One exquisite feature is its door mechanism - using a centrally mounted handle, the doors effortlessly slide open and backward, parallel to the body.

The Xenia is André Dubonnet’s personal car. It leads the parade that celebrates the reopening of the Saint Cloud highway tunnel outside Paris to civilian traffic. Alain Balleret, president of the French Hispano-Suiza Club, purchases and restores the Xenia in the `60s. The car changes a few owners in the next years and today it is part of the Peter Mullin Automotive Museum.

Flemming is a digital artist with a traditional painting background. Long time Formula One fan, she has always been passionate about automobiles. After finishing her degree in communicative arts, she worked in advertisement; where she developed a taste for digital automotive art and eventually turned to illustration.

One of her recent series is dedicated to the dawn of the automotive industry in the first half of the last century when aerodynamics started to dominate the minds of car designers and engineers in their eternal pursuit of the automotive dream, and a hunger for speed.
