Abarth 595 Gulf
Abarth 595 Gulf
This Gulf-livered FIAT Abarth 595 is the evidence that strong performance can come in a compact form. The car is a track-ready pocket rocket. Just have a look at the Trofeo Abarth racing series. We are in awe of the stunning driving skills of these fans of Italian racing jewels.
FIAT Abarth 595 is pretty tricky to race and drive because its weight distribution is far away from the perfect 50:50 proportion. The engine of this FWD sporty mini is in front of the front wheels so the mass gravity centre makes the rear wheels extremely self-willed, especially in fast corners.
Engineering a micro supercar
Think of the Abarth 595 as a micro supercar. The nippy 1.4 turbo four-cylinder engine is capable of 160 hp (or 200 hp if you opt for the Assetto Corse version), while the car weight is less than a thousand kilos. This is a definite promise of motoring thrills.
Its engine is based on the Fire range of FIAT motorization units. They date back to the mid-'80s and are fueled by a single carburettor. The car has a capacity of 1368 cm3 and is filled with air by turbocharger and intercooler. This compact track warrior is capable of impressive acceleration. It is hard not to love the combination of its rather cute look and aggressive aerodynamics. Of course, the legendary livery of Gulf Oil is the cherry on the cake.
The base FIAT 500 debuts in 2007 as a direct competitor to Smart ForTwo which is a total hit on the Italian market because of its compact size. FIAT decides that it should take back its crown in the supermini category and the company creates a retro model of the beloved Cinquecento from the '60s. This car becomes an unprecedented success.
