BMW 2002 Turbo
BMW 2002 Turbo
This BMW 2002 Turbo art print showcases the story of a pivotal model from the Bavarian manufacturer. What makes the BMW 2002 Turbo truly special is not just its striking Turbo body or its turbocharged engine. It's the car that secured BMW's presence in the United States and achieved the enduring status of a cool and iconic vehicle.
To set the stage, it all begins with the relatively affordable small BMW 1600 dominating a significant portion of the US market. At the time, the desirable cars were the beautifully designed Alfa Romeos and the agile Datsuns. The 1.6-liter 2-door coupe version of the 1600 was considered a good value for money. However, its 4-cylinder engine, producing around 80 hp, didn't provide the sporty feel, and the hotter 1600 Ti version never made it to the States due to emission standards. As always, this presented an exciting opportunity that couldn't be ignored.
Both the Director of product planning and the Engine designer at BMW, independently, decided to swap in their 2-liter M10 engines. Legendary European importer Max Hoffman also recognized the need for a more powerful version to cater to the American market. Thus, the 2002 model was introduced, giving everyone a taste of the true BMW driving experience.
The "turbo" era begins as BMW races a turbocharged version of the 2002 in 1969 when turbo technology was in its early days. Dieter Quester's victory in the European Touring Car Championship showed that the technology, while not as reliable as today, was progressing well.
The production version of the BMW 2002 Turbo hit the market in 1973 and became an instant success. It featured a KKK turbocharger and the Kugelfischer injection system from the 1600 Ti, producing 170 hp. The lightweight body of the BMW 2002 delivered exceptional performance. Once you pushed the throttle and the turbocharger kicked in above 4000 rpm, the car became unstoppable.
In Germany, the BMW 2002 Turbo faced criticism from the Road Safety lobby, which believed its power and appearance encouraged reckless driving.
Unfortunately, the 1973-1974 oil crisis led to the discontinuation of the BMW 2002 Turbo, with only 1672 cars manufactured.
We are honored to have this beautiful BMW 2002 Turbo wall print by the artist Stamatis Tsirdimos in our collection.
Stamatis Tsirdimos
Stamatis Tsirdimos, known as Stam, is a freelance art director residing in Marathon, Greece. His deep love for cars, especially Formula 1 cars, traces back to childhood days spent playing Super Top Trump cards and avidly watching Formula 1 Grand Prix races. Evolving into a professional, Stam delved into the artistic side of cars, expanding his focus to racing cars, historical vehicles, and prototypes. His unique approach involves designing cars not just as sketches or 3D models, but rather, in his words, in "a photographic manner with the imperfections that handcrafted work brings".
