In the late '60s, the idea of combining French elegance with Italian engineering seemed promising. However, the reality was not as ideal as anticipated. The Citroen SM project began with the ambition to create a sporty version of the iconic Citroen DS, resulting in one of the most exceptional cars from the French company and the fastest front-wheel-drive car of its time.

This Citroen SM art is a love letter to aerodynamics

In 1968, Citroen acquired Maserati, granting the French access to the impressive engine for their future flagship car, the SM. The V6 engine featured an unusual 90-degree angle between the cylinder banks and came in a 2.7 L form producing 170 hp or a 3.0 L version with 180 hp. While not a large engine for a GT coupe of that era, the Citroen SM's exceptional aerodynamics also made it fuel-efficient. Despite its modest size, the car could reach a reported top speed of 235 km/h, surpassing its rivals like the Jensen Interceptor that consumed twice as much fuel at 12.5 L/100 km. However, the engine earned a reputation for reliability issues, particularly with the timing chain and ignition cassettes. Prospective Citroen SM owners need both a dedicated Citroen expert and a Maserati engine specialist.

Nevertheless, the ownership experience of one of the most technologically advanced cars of its time is considered worth the effort. In addition to the impressive hydro-pneumatic and self-leveling suspension, the Citroen SM introduced the self-centering Diravi steering system. The hydraulic brake system was among the best of its time, ensuring the shortest stopping distances. The front drums were inboard for better mass balance and cooling via large ducts underneath the car.

Much credit goes to Robert Opron, Citroen's chief designer, for blending the best of Citroen and Maserati and styling the SM. His work achieved a remarkable 0.26 drag coefficient, a figure challenging to beat even by today's standards. This is one of the reasons why we are delighted to feature this beautiful Citroen SM print in our car art collection, created by the talented artist Jochen Paesen.
