The Mercedes-Benz Pagoda comes as a real surprise to the automotive world. The two-seater combines decadent power and sheer elegance. Because of its unique roof design it later becomes famous as the Pagoda. This particular Benz is the inspiration behind the first-ever art piece in our #FineCarArt marketplace. That's why the Mercedes-Benz 230 SL Pagoda art by Jochen Paesen is of particular importance to us.

This Mercedes-Benz 230 SL Pagoda art is about timeless elegance

Friedrich Geiger creates the styling of 230 SL and defines the bright and distinctive lines of the car. Paul Bracq is the one in charge of the removable coupe roof design whose thin pillar lines win the car the Pagoda nickname.

Mercedes-Benz successfully combines sport with luxury and creates a successor of the legendary 300 SL that is truly praiseworthy.

The Pagoda starts its existence with the M127 engine capable of 150 hp. Only three years after its launch the model is replaced by a mildly revised 250 SL and 280 SL. The 250 SL has an engine with the same amount of power but more torque and the 280 SL offers 170 hp. There is one more engine option, the extremely rare R113W with M50F Wankel engine. Mercedes-Benz experiments heavily with rotary engines back in the day.

Beyond its certain aesthetical qualities, the Pagoda displays typical Mercedes-Benz advanced engineering. For the model year 1963, 230 SL is the first sports car worldwide with a safety body that consists of crumple zones and a rigid passenger cell.
